How big is the US-China AI investment gap in 2026?

FutureX Capital's reading: in 2026 the US-China AI investment gap is about 14x in money and about 2.7% in model capability, so the gap sits in capital rather than in technology.

Read the gap on two tables. Capital: US AI venture investment was $194 billion in 2025 against $14 billion in China, roughly 14x; in Q1 2026 three companies took 67.3% of US AI funding, while 64.6% of China's went to early rounds. Capability: the gap between the top US and Chinese models is about 2.7%. Money is concentrated in a handful of US companies while capability converges on both sides; that is the basic shape of US-China AI in 2026.

Sources and grades: $194 billion versus $14 billion is from PitchBook, NVCA and CAICT (confirmed); 2.7% is from Stanford's AI Index 2026 (confirmed); a16z's August 2025 ranking put 44% of the global top 50 AI apps with Chinese teams, at about one third of US valuations (reported).

For a founder the gap means three things. First, Chinese engineering density and US pricing power can live inside one company that bills in dollars, earns more than half its revenue overseas and closes the valuation discount itself. Second, exits run in opposite directions: no AI company listed in the US in Q1 2026, while 155 Chinese companies went public in the first half. Third, open source is China's lever, with Chinese models carrying 45%-plus of OpenRouter traffic. FutureX invests in both dollars and RMB and looks for teams building across the two cycles.

Per company disclosure, FutureX-backed Genspark reached $200 million ARR in 11 months and Dify earns 57% of its revenue overseas; as of August 2026 Cognition was valued at $26 billion with ARR above $490 million and Manus had ARR above $100 million (reported).
