How do AI companies exit in 2026, and how much goes through IPOs, M&A and secondary sales?
FutureX Capital's judgment: AI exits in 2026 stand on three legs, IPOs, strategic M&A and secondary sales. None of the sources on this site splits the three on one basis. What can be checked is that US exit value is concentrated in a handful of large deals and that the IPO window opened first in China.
Start with what can be measured on each leg. Crunchbase counted 32 companies going public at valuations above $1 billion in Q2 2026, plus 24 acquisitions above $1 billion, the most billion-dollar exits in a quarter since 2021. IPOs ran in opposite directions: no AI company listed in the US in Q1 2026, while 155 Chinese companies went public in the first half, raising a combined RMB 233.985 billion. Secondary sales have no aggregate count in the sources on this site; a16z, citing Carta, puts the median tender-offer subscription rate at 93.1% and the median seller participation rate at 57.9% in Q2.
One deal can carry a quarter. Per PitchBook-NVCA, SpaceX's acquisition of Cursor developer Anysphere made up 53.1% of US venture exit value in Q3 2026 (Reported). Without it, the quarter's exit value was $53 billion, the lowest since late 2024. a16z, citing PitchBook, says the top 1% of exits made up 84% of US exit value in the first half.
Who is buying: FutureX's judgment is that incumbents cannot buy time, so they buy teams. Public deal disclosures: Google paid $32 billion for Wiz, SpaceX $60 billion for Cursor, Meta $14.3 billion for 49% of Scale, IBM $11 billion for Confluent. AI startup acquisitions in 2025 numbered 429 in the US, 233 in Europe and 63 in Asia. FutureX expects China, which trails the US by 12 to 18 months on average, to see a similar wave in 2026 to 2028. October added two sets of talks: Amazon over buying Decart for about $7 billion, and Nvidia over more investment in, or compute for, Reflection AI (Reported). None of this is investment advice.
On September 3, 2026 Nvidia announced it would acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, with closing expected in H1 2027 (Verified, SEC 8-K and Nvidia blog). Under the agreement signed September 2, about $11.9 billion goes to shareholders and up to $1 billion to staff retention. Per company disclosure the platform has 18 million developers and 3 million models. It is the largest M&A exit of an open-source AI infrastructure asset in this window.
